I've always wanted to talk about periods on the blog, but I've never known if that's something you want to read about. Plus I know a lot of people in real life who read my blog. And I'm not sure I want them reading about my period experiences.
But I think there should be more transparency around periods. So I've finally mustered up the courage to write this.
Growing Up With a Vagina
When I was growing up, there was a lot of shame and secrecy surrounding periods.
Not to mention I hated pads and tampons. They weren't comfortable, and they felt like the enemy. I didn't feel like they supported my body in it's natural flow.
Conventional Period Products
There's nothing new here. Conventional period products aren't the best for your body.
I could write a whole post about this, but I think I'm going to hand it off to another blogger who knows her stuff. A few years ago, Joy McCarthy from Joyous Health wrote a post entitled, Conventional vs. Organic Tampons & Pads. She explains the risks of conventional period products, and shares some of her own favourites.
Green Beauty Period Products
When I discovered natural beauty, I also discovered natural period products. And my life was changed.
At first I used the Natracare tampons. They're made with organic cotton. They're also biodegradable, chlorine free, and plastic free. They were a great introduction to period products that actually cared about the people using them.
After almost four years of using the Diva Cup, it's safe to say it's my favourite product. You can read all about it on their website, but here are my favourite parts of this menstrual cup.
- Offers 12 hour protection
- Made from a high quality, health care grade silicone
- Super comfortable
- Doesn't include any latex, plastic, PVC, acrylic, acrylate, BPA, colours, or dyes
- Reusable for up to a year
- The only reusable, menstrual cup in Canada
If you're not into putting anything into your vagina, don't worry. I've got one more period product to share.
Have you heard of THINX? It's a rad company that makes period panties for everyone with vaginas. They're simple, almost minimal, but with so much to offer! Here's the run down.
- Moisture Wicking
- Leak Resistent
You pick the panties that are right for your body and your period flow. Then you use them on your period days, no tampons or pads necessary! Simply rinse the panties in the sink before throwing them in the wash.
It couldn't be easier. You get to go without pads, tampons, or cups, but you still get the protection you need. Not to mention THINX works to help girls and women in Uganda get access to period products.
I don't get annoyed when my period arrives anymore. I embrace it as part of my body's natural process. Getting my period is a good thing because it means my body is happy, healthy, and doing it's normal thing. Having access to these awesome, natural period products makes it even better.
Now it's your turn to join the conversation. What kind of period products do you use? Do you prefer conventional or natural options?
Until next time,
