Building a skincare routine from scratch can seem so overwhelming, especially if you're new to green beauty. You may not know what products are effective, what brands are out there, or what products you really need.
Today I want to help you out and offer my tips for building a simple, 3 step skincare routine.
I've also created a free worksheet that gives you some skincare reminders and lets you work through your skin type so you can determine how to build your 3 step skincare routine!
Why Do I Need a Routine?
In my experience, your skin needs consistency. Using different products every day can make things confusing for your skin, as you're using so many different ingredients that it gets overwhelmed.
It also helps to regulate your skin. If you're using something that's too drying one day, and then too moisturizing the next, your skin is going to get out of control.
But the most important reason, I find, for having a consistent routine is it helps you to determine what your skin really needs.
If you're using products until they're empty, you can get a really good idea of how they worked for you. Did it irritate your skin? Clog your pores? Or did it help reduce redness or irritation?

I Already Have a Routine, Do I Need to Change it?
It's possible. I've gone through periods where my skin routine just wasn't working for my skin anymore. I change my products seasonally, as my skin's needs change with the weather. Maybe yours does too.
For example, my skin breaks out more in the summer. So not only do I make sure to eat better, but I usually incorporate an acne fighting serum and switch to lighter products.
While your skin isn't the most important thing in your life, it's a good idea to keep an eye on it and see how it changes when you're using different products or going through difficult life changes.
How Do I Build a Skincare Routine?
Now we're getting to the fun stuff! A good skincare routine starts with the basics; a cleanser, toner, and moisturizer.
That's the foundation for the routine, and if you find yourself needing to build a routine, start with these. Once you've found a good cleanser, toner, and moisturizer, you can move on to masks and other products.
How to Find a Cleanser for You
When it comes to cleansing, I recommend finding a light and gentle one that removes makeup. Cleansers are usually either gels, creams, oils, or balms.
If you have oiler skin, a gel based cleanser should work wonderfully. But if you have drier skin, try a cream, oil, or balm first.
How to Find a Toner for You
Toners are one of my favourite parts of my routine. They help to refresh, balance your pH, and prep your skin for the rest of your routine.
My favourites are the simplest. If you have oiler skin, look for something that's a little more astringent. If you have drier skin, look for something more hydrating.
Thayer's Witch Hazels are a great place to start as they have different blends with botanical extracts that you can customize to your skin's needs.
How to Find a Moisturizer For You
Moisturizing can be as simple or as complex as you make it. I love using nourishing creams and simple oils. If you have oily skin, you may feel like using an oil is the worst idea.
But it'll actually help to hydrate and nourish you skin, which will actually balance oil production. I used to have super oily skin, but once I started using face oils regularly, it's all balanced out!
You'll also want to use an SPF every morning. My favourite is the Badger Balm Sport Sunscreen Stick.
Are These 3 Products Enough?
Yes they are! My routine looks like this, but I use a serum to help with specific skin issues. I totally recommends serums, but when you're just getting started, or when you need to create a new routine, start with these basics.
Once you've got your foundation, you can move on to a serum, or add a weekly face mask. But if you're taking care of your skin with the basics, you may not even need a serum or a mask.
