Self care is something that is very important to me and I love sharing it with you. I've learned that prioritizing self care is so important because when I'm more calm and balanced, I'm able to be my best self.
Keep in mind that self care is different for everyone. I want to share some of the green beauty self care rituals I love, but these are just ideas to get you started, and if they don't work for you, that's okay.
I do want to point out that as someone with a mental illness the best thing that I can do for my overall well being is to go to therapy. I don't want to gloss over that and make it seem like you don't need therapy to help take care of yourself because some people do and that is A okay.
But I also know that for me, therapy isn't the end all of self care. There are lots of things that I can do every day to help me feel balanced.
Today I want to share those with you, and I'd really love if you want to share your story about self care in the comments!
Essential oils have slowly crept their way into becoming a kind of support system. After having a chat with Allie Tymoczko about doTerra oils I saw essential oils in a totally different light. I've been using them for years, but Allie helped show me that oils can be incredible healing.
Since then, I've noticed how different I feel when I'm using different oils. I use the Balance Blend a lot, as its very grounding and it helps with my anxiety.
You can incorporate essential oils into your self care practice by diffusing them in your space, crafting beauty products with them, and wearing them on essential oil jewelry.
I used to go to a hot yoga studio and practice a few times a week. But over time I found that going to a studio and being surrounded by strangers wasn't helping me. It was actually making things worse.
Now I've got a daily home practice routine. I usually follow one of Adriene's videos because I like her style, the routines are gentle but can be challenging, and it's a much more restorative and healing practice than the studio practice.
If you haven't tried her videos I really encourage you to do so. Exercising can be something really beneficial and enjoyable, or it can make you miserable. I really encourage you to try to find something you enjoy so it can become an act of self care.
Baths + Time for Yourself + Your Hobbies.
Another ritual that is really important is making time for yourself and for your hobbies.
For me, that's mostly having baths and reading. I like to schedule in an hour as often as I can to just relax, breathe, and enjoy a book.
There's nothing like it, I feel so genuinely relaxed afterwards that whatever I was worried about before seems like a distant thing of the past.
Healing + Calming Teas.
I used to always try to find ways to energize myself. But then I realized that when I was really hyper and energized, I was also anxious. It was a light bulb moment that's made me realize I actually need to calm down more.
I've cut back on caffeine, and I'm looking to cut it out altogether. Instead of a green tea, I'll opt for a calming chamomile, even in the early mornings. I don't want to fall asleep, obviously, but I choose relaxing and healing teas instead of uplifting and energizing ones.
I don't find myself wanting to go back to bed, but I do feel more calm and relaxed now that I've started this ritual.
These are just a few of the self care rituals I'm going to be using in the New Year. I'd love to hear your self care rituals, tips, and your self care stories!
