April is Stress Awareness Month. I'm an incredibly stressed and anxious person. So I want to take some time to talk about stress and how we can find simple ways to relax within our busy days.
I'm usually stressed about something. I also deal with a lot of anxiety. The combination of the two means it's very important for me to find ways to take some time to relax, rejuvenate, and chill out.
It also means that while I may not always be the best at managing stress, I definitely know how to manage it. But sometimes I forget because I'm stressed. Funny how that works, eh?
Essential Oils //
Maybe you're thinking I'm off to a rocky start, because how can essential oils reduce my stress levels? Oh believe me, they can.
In the last few weeks, I've started really incorporating them in my daily routines and it's made such a difference.
I believe essential oils can support you and your body. Not physically or anything. But emotionally.
When I've got a delicious, soothing oil diffusing in the living room, it gives me something positive to take a moment to enjoy. Instead of rushing around, I've got a reason to sit still for a few seconds and just breathe.
It's also incredibly helpful to use them in my body care routines. I'll put a few drops of lavender or peppermint in my bath to soothe or refresh. A few drops of eucalyptus mixed with Shea butter works to clear my head and moisturize my skin.
Calming Teas //
I've noticed the more tea I drink, the better I feel. There's something so calming about sipping a cup of delicious tea.
Standing at the counter waiting for the water to boil, and holding a warm cup in my hands gives me a chance to pause and just enjoy something simple. Caffeine free is best here, as you don't want to get jittery!
My favourite teas are by Traditional Medicinals. They're created by herbalists, and they offer a wide range of organic teas for all of your needs. My current faves are their EveryDay Detox Dandelion and their Easy Now tea.
I also enjoy a simple lemon tea every day. Squeeze a lemon into your cup, pour in the hot water and you're all set.
Exercise for Mind + Body //
I'm sure you've all heard this before. But it's so true. Taking an hour for yourself to exercise is so beneficial. It's give your body a chance to move and stretch. It'll give your mind time to switch off and relax. It'll also give you something to enjoy and look forward to.
Yoga is my favourite way to exercise for my mind and my body. I've started practicing yoga at Moksha Yoga, here in Toronto. If you're local, I recommend heading to one of their classes, as they've got studios all over Toronto.
If you don't want to venture out to classes, check out Yoga with Adriene. Adriene is a friendly yogi with a relaxed approach. Her classes are around thirty minutes, but some are as short as ten, so you can easily squeeze that into your busy day.
Self Care Sessions //
I'm a big advocate for self care. Finding simple ways to take care of yourself is so important. You'll feel pamperedand more relaxed every day.
I like to take one day a week for an hour or two of self care, where I'll do my nails, have a bath or shower, do a face steam, and use a mask. But you can spend as much or as little time on your self care as you want, and it can include whatever you want.
It's all about finding time to take care of you and to make sure you feel your best. When you feel your best, it's a lot easier to manage your stress.
Reading + Meditating //
This is another one we always hear. But it's true.
Let's chat about reading first. I used to drink my coffee while watching YouTube videos and reading blog posts. But that slowly evolved into apartment hunting or online shopping. Those things are great, but seven am is not the time.
So instead I've started enjoying my coffee on the couch, with a book or magazine in hand. It gives me ten to fifteen minutes to sit down and thoroughly enjoy my coffee and some kind of reading. It's also helped me start the day with a fresh mind that's ready to take on the day.
On to meditating. Meditating is hard. But it's a really great way to take five to ten minutes for yourself to clear your mind and just breathe. If you're not into reading, take some time to meditate every morning. Or some other activity that brings you joy and a clear mind.
I've covered a lot here, so I hope it wasn't overwhelming! If you've got any stress busting tips, leave them below so we can all benefit.
